San Miguel Beer bucked the injuries of Chris Ross and Vic Manuel to squeeze out an 87-81 victory over Magnolia Timplados and grab the solo lead in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center on Friday, June 17.

Mo Tautuaa gave the Beermen a huge lift in the second half while June Mar Fajardo took charge in the waning minutes to prevail in the tight contest and improve to a 3-0 record in the standings.
SMB went exclusively to its twin towers at the post in the payoff period as Tautuaa posted 19 points and five rebounds while Fajardo had either scored or assisted on nine of the Beermen’s last 12 points to finish with 14 markers, six boards and two assists.
SMB lost key pieces in the first half as Manuel appeared to have hurt his calf and never returned early in the second quarter while Ross injured his right knee during a layup attempt and had to be carried out of the court with still 2:57 remaining in the first half.
Good thing, four other players stepped up and scored in twin digits led by CJ Perez who had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Marcio Lassiter, Rodney Brondial and Jericho Cruz added 10 points apiece although the latter also failed to finish the match after hurting his knee late in the final frame.
“Talagang nangyayari ito eh but I’m so happy with the team, even though we don’t have Chris Ross and Vic Manuel, we were able to survive against a cohesive team and energetic team,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria.
Barocca paced the Hotshots with 25 points while Ian Sanggalang added 16 markers which all went down the drain.
It was see-saw affair in the first three quarters before San Miguel went on a 13-5 spurt — the last four points courtesy Fajardo's great passes off the post to Cruz and Lassiter for an 83-75 lead with 1:36 left in the game.
Magnolia retaliated with six unanswered points courtesy of Barocca to come within two, 83-81 with 54 seconds left. Two free throw conversions from Fajardo and Cruz rebuilt a four point cushion for SMB.
Magnolia had the chance to inch close in the next possession but Abueva was called for an illegal pick. The Hotshots managed to complete a stop on the other end but Aris Dionisio back rimmed a potential game tying trey before a Perez dunk on the other end sealed the deal for the Beermen.
