Poland willing to help PH on food security, defense sector

Poland is willing to extend help to the Philippines in connection with the looming food crisis as well as the defense sector, revealed Chargé d’ Affaires of Poland, Jaroslaw Szczepankiewic following his courtesy call with President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Friday, June 17.

“We raised the questions of food security in the Philippines and the contribution of Poland to assure the food security, especially in the meat sector,” said Szczepankiewic in a press conference after meeting with Marcos on Friday.

When asked by reporters about the border security between Poland and Ukraine in relation to the Russia crisis, the Polish envoy said that they have been working to ensure the export of Ukrainian wheat given the price increase in flour-based products.

He also bared that 70 Filipinos had crossed the Poland-Ukraine border to escape the conflict.

“I informed him that around or more than 70 Filipinos crossed the Polish border from the Ukraine from the beginning of the conflict and that we are working hard to assure the export of the Ukrainian wheat that it's creating a big problem in terms of the increase of the prices of bread and some commodities,” he said.

Szczepankiewic added that he and Marcos discussed further cooperation regarding the defense sector.

“We are talking about cooperation in the defense sector and as you know Poland is producing the Black Hawks for the Philippine air forces so it's about this and the possibility of how to extend this cooperation," he said.

The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) recently entered into an agreement with Polish aerospace company PZL Mielec to purchase–for US$624 million–a total of 32 S70i Black Hawk helicopters for the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

Aside from the Polish ambassador, Marcos also met with envoys from New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, and Nigeria on Friday.
