ITCZ to bring scattered rain showers, thunderstorms over Mindanao

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), a region where winds coming from the northeast and southeast hemispheres converge that triggers thunderstorms and rain showers, will prevail over some parts of Mindanao in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday, June 17.

Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen are expected to have cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms due to the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

PAGASA warned the public against flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.

Moreover, the entire archipelago may experience light to moderate winds and slight to moderate coastal waters.

Weather specialist Benison Estareja said PAGASA has not monitored a tropical cyclone that may develop inside the Philippine area of responsibility this weekend.

As of Friday, Estareja also noted that there is a slim chance of tropical cyclone development inside the country’s area of responsibility until the end of June.
