Fire hits Metropolitan Theater in Manila

A fire hit the Metropolitan Theater in Arroceros, Ermita, Manila on Friday morning, June 17.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire was raised to the first alarm at 8:55 a.m. It then escalated to the second alarm at 9 a.m.

The fire has been declared fire out at 9:41 a.m.

In a statement released by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the Metropolitan Theater, the fire originated from a room in the first floor of the Padre Burgos Wing, which was being further renovated under the Phase III of the theater's rehabilitation project.

The fire did not spread to other areas of the complex or the theater.

There were also no casualties or major damage to property aside from some old equipment that was then removed from the building, the statement added.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the BFP.

The cost of damages done to the theater is yet to be determined.

A classic venue for hosting the Filipino arts, the Metropolitan Theater was inaugurated in 1931. Damaged by the Second World War and under utilized since, the theater was formally closed in 1996.

It re-opened to the public on Dec. 10, 2021 after undergoing rehabilitation and renovations.
