Northern Mindanao sees big increase in dengue cases from January 1 to June 11
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Department of Health regional office of Northern Mindanao (DOH-10) has recorded a big increase in the number of dengue cases in the region from January 1 to June 11 this year.

DOH-10 medical technologist Gemma Uy, in a media forum on Thursday, June 16, said the region has already recorded 3,844 cases, 134.25% higher than the number of cases recorded in the same period last year which saw 1,641 cases.
Based on the data from the DOH-10’s Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU), the province of Bukidnon has the most number of cases this year with 1,322.
It was followed by Cagayan de Oro (757); Misamis Oriental (718); Lanao del Norte (502); Iligan City (294); Misamis Occidental (244); and Camiguin province (7).
With the given data, Uy said the dengue cases in the region have already reached the epidemic threshold.
The DOH-10 has also recorded 14 fatalities due to dengue, of which four were from this city, three each from Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon, and two each from Iligan City and Lanao del Norte.
Uy urged parents to immediately consult their children to the health authorities in their nearest health station, especially if they already experience symptoms such as fever.
“Our doctors already know how to manage at the primary level before it becomes severe because there were some where they let 2-3 days pass before they submit themselves to the hospital,” said Uy in vernacular.
“Once the stomach becomes painful, that means there is already bleeding. So, we should not let this happen. We should consult the doctor once we already have a fever,” she added.
Uy underscored the importance of 5S strategy’ to fight the increasing number of dengue cases amid the ongoing threat of the Covid-19.
The 5S strategy consists of search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, self-protection measures, seek early consultation, support fogging for impending outbreaks and sustain hydration.
The DOH-10, Uy said, has already formulated the checklist for preparedness to determine how ready the hospitals and other health facilities if the dengue cases in the region will further increase.
She reiterated that the DOH-10 has been continuously implementing prevention programs to fight dengue.
