CBCP promotes community-based mental health programs

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) - Health Care Ministry is promoting a community-based mental health program for those suffering from depression and other mental health issues.

Camilian priest Fr. Dan Cancino, executive-secretary of the CBCP Health Care Ministry said, the program seeks to focus on the mental health condition of the public, especially those who are experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental problems.

“The CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Health’s priority project is to promote community-based mental health programs in partnership with other institutions like the Philippine Mental Health Association and the different dioceses and parishes that also promote wellness programs,” Fr. Cancino said over Radio Veritas.

“The St. Camillus Center for listening is offering free service as a means to show care for those who are experiencing mental health issues,” he added. The center offers telephone, online, and face-to-face counseling.

According to Fr. Cancino, the pandemic has caused a rise in the incidents of mental health issues for various reasons such as fear of acquiring the disease, separation from loved ones, loss of job and livelihood, restricted movement, and other consequences of the pandemic, especially among the young who experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health-related problems.
