BACOLOD CITY – Two brothers allegedly linked to the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to authorities in Barangay Nagbinlod, Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental Wednesday, June 15.

The siblings turned themselves in to the Army 11th Infantry Battalion (IB) and the local police.

The alleged NPA link of these brothers was confirmed by a couple who reunited with their one-year-old son after they also returned to the fold of the law in the town last week.

Based on a report from the Army, one of the rebel returnees reportedly entered the organization in 2015 while the other joined the armed struggle in 2021. Both became part of the NPA based in the area.

Aside from them, two other former rebels also surrendered to the 82nd IB in Panay last May 23.

In a span of one month, six former rebels have surrendered, according to the Army.

Major Gen. Benedict Arevalo, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division (ID), in a statement, said the influx of surrenderers in Panay and Negros is expected, as remaining NPA members start to realize that the government are now collaboratively resolving all social and economic issues of the communities.

"We will continue to reach out for those rebels who would want to surrender,” Arevalo said, adding that these rebel returnees will be living witnesses about the government's sincerity in giving them another chance to live a normal life.
