PH Youth Convergence: DepEd's 'safe and inclusive' space for young Filipinos

Recognizing the various challenges currently faced by the youth, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday, June 15, formally launched the first-ever Philippine Youth Convergence (PYC).
With the theme “#YOUthBelong!: Embracing Diversity, Achieving Quality and Inclusive Education for All,” the PYC 2022 was initiated by the DepEd through the Youth Formation Division (YFD) under the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Youth Affairs and Special Concerns (OASYASC).
The said initiative was developed in response to DepEd’s thrust to “reassess, realign, and refocus its youth-related initiatives to be more responsive to the needs of the Filipino youth.”

The three-day program, held from June 15 to 17 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, gathered over 2,000 Senior High School (SHS) learners, youth leaders, and education stakeholders nationwide.
Youth Affairs and Special Concerns Assistant Secretary Juan Valeriano C. Respicio IV explained that DepEd envisions the PYC to be a “safe space and an inclusive avenue” for young learners to “further realize and commit to their goal in nation-building.”
The youth, Respicio said, can also use the PYC to create “diverse networks across the country and share these common goals.”
Respicio also noted that the participation of learners in the PYC will help DepEd to understand their needs and align its initiatives to “offer broader opportunities to our youth and achieve inclusive education for all.”
Through the PYC, DepEd hopes to impart participating students with the appropriate tools, skills, grounding, and perspective.
DepEd noted that the three-day summit also aims to identify solutions and relevant opportunities to address the needs of Filipino youth and craft the Youth Education Agenda.

The Agenda, DepEd said, will reflect the common sentiments and outlooks, constructive feedback, and policy recommendations of students to achieve quality and inclusive education for all while imbuing the DepEd Core Values of Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan, at Makabansa.
DepEd noted that PYC also aims to collaborate and build a strong network across different sectors to deliver accurate, responsive, and impactful change, offer meaningful opportunities for the youth to learn about their role in nation-building, and provide a safe space to build a network of like-minded individuals.
