Ex-soldier gunned down in Laguna

CAVINTI, Laguna – A former Philippine Army (PA) soldier was shot dead by an unidentified gunman onboard a motorcycle in Sitio Duhatan, Barangay Anglas, this town, Tuesday, June 14.

Town police chief Police Major Ramises de Castro identified the victim as Zacarias Sorongon, 67, a former Army soldier on Absence Without Leave (AWOL) status, farmland caretaker, and a resident of the barangay.

A witness told police that the suspect, wearing a gray jacket with a hood and riding a black motorcycle, arrived at the victim’s house at around 8:30 p.m. and pretended to ask something.

The victim approached and the suspect drew a firearm of still unknown caliber and shot Sorongon thrice, killing him on the spot.

The suspect fled towards Luisiana, this province, and the police here have alarmed nearby police stations to conduct dragnet operations.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the identity of the gunman and determine the motive of the crime.
