JRU turns back Letran in NCAA women's volleyball

Jose Rizal University took advantage of Letran’s erratic plays to prevail, 13-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17, Tuesday and nail its first victory in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Paco Arena.

The Lady Bombers gained 42 points off the Lady Knights’ unforced errors to clinch the win in one hour and 57 minutes.

Sydney Niegos led the JRU crew with 11 points highlighted by three kills, while Renesa Melgar chipped in 10 points including eight spikes.

Letran actually outplayed JRU in attacks, 43-35, and service aces, 8-6, but their inconsistency proved critical to its downfall.

Niegos and Melgar overshadowed the efforts of Shereena Urmeneta and Chamberlaine Cunada, who combined for 25 points in a futile effort for Letran.

Meanwhile, Melgar also contributed 13 digs even as Marianne Alona also posted 19 digs, while Jerry Laurente managed 23 excellent sets for JRU.

Skipper Dolly Verzosa and Riza Rose also combined for 17 points for the Lady Bombers.

JRU next clashes with Emilio Aguinaldo College on Friday, while Letran tackles University of Perpetual Help on the same day.
