Nurse dies after fall from Tabuk City zipline

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- A nurse who tried the so-called ‘Slide for Life,’ a type of obstacle challenge that’s one of the attractions in a camp site here, ended his quest in a sad tragedy instead.

The disaster came for Paul Herbert Pallaya Gaayon, 31, married, and resident of Purok 5, Bulanao Centro, Tabuk City, Kalinga, as he lost his grip on the handle perched on the zip line even before he could launch himself to the slide.

The hurdler is supposed to fall on the water in this type of obstacle challenge at L&C Resort in Sitio Gapang, Barangay Bagumbayan in this city.

Unfortunately for Gaayon, he missed the water and fell from as high as 18 feet near the starting pole and hit the pool’s concrete pavement on the side in a shocking accident on Sunday afternoon.

Tabuk City Police Station investigator Lt. Ryan Antonio said that the victim had actually succeeded in his first try on the zip line as witnessed by the victim’s brother, Bernard Pallaya Gaayon, 34, who is a member of the PNP-Special Action Force.

He said that Gaayon, a registered nurse and a staff at the Kalinga Provincial Hospital, tried to repeat his feat but failed in his bid as disaster struck.

Gaayon was rushed to the same hospital but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Dr. Bernard Wandaga.
