Netflix's 'Squid Game' season 2: Director reveals characters who will be back

Netflix has revealed details about season 2 of the global hit Korean series “Squid Game.”

“Squid Game” was released last September and became Netflix’s biggest show with 1.65 billion hours viewed in the first 28 days on the video streaming platform.

The series is about 456 debt-ridden individuals who join and play dangerous children’s games with a prize of 45.6 billion won (about $35.6 million).

Now, director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is also the writer and executive producer of the series, announced in a letter the characters who will return in season 2.

Here is his letter:

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.

“As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.

“And now, Gi-hun returns.

“The Front Man returns.

“Season 2 is coming.

“The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.

“You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.

“Join us once more for a whole new round."

Gi-hun is actor Lee Jung-jae while the man in the suit with ddakji was played by Gong Yoo in season 1.

Ddakji is the Korean game involving folded paper tiles. In season 1, Gong Yoo recruits players by engaging them in ddakji with the promise of money as prize.

The Front Man was played by actor Lee Byung-hun. Young-hee is the giant doll in season 1 and was based on a character in Korean textbooks.
