Baguio opens Burnham Lake to recreational fishing

BAGUIO CITY – The city government has allowed recreational fishing in Burnham Lake as one of the activities here starting Monday, June 13.

The City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) announced that they are now accepting applications for permit from fishing enthusiasts and hobbyists subject to a set of guidelines.

According to Sandra Almag, supervising administrative officer, a hobbyist or applicant must first obtain a permit from the CEPMO before undertaking any fishing activity in Burnham Lake.

Almag said the permit is non-transferable and bearers should only be residents of the city with basic fishing knowledge to avoid any adverse events both to man and fish in the lake.

Fishing is subject to a catch-and-release policy. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian and the clean as you go policy will be enforced and do not leave any clutter in the area.

They must bring their own fishing gear – fishing rod, bait, and bucket – and only 10 people are allowed to fish at a time in the designated area for a maximum of two hours per person per day.

“They have to follow health and safety protocols. Residents outside Baguio City and tourists must obtain a permit for each fishing session,” Almag said.

Violations such as tampering and or illegal use of the license and permit shall be grounds for cancellation and disapproval of the fishing activity.
