Two teenagers die in sand collapse after digging hole near Cagayan River
SOLANA, Cagayan – A 13-year old high school student and a grade six pupil died when a hilly yet sandy portion they were digging near Cagayan River collapsed on them in Purok 2, Brgy. Andarayan North in this town on Friday.

Tragedy struck as Niño Chris Baggayan, 13, High school student, and A-jay Lumabao, 10, Grade 6 pupil, together with Andrew Cambri, started excavating what looked like a hardened sand formation near the Cagayan River, a report from the Solana Philippine National Police said.
The sand collapsed and caught Niño Baggayan and A-Jay Lumabao, while Cambri quickly stood up and survived the killer sand.
According to the police report, Cambri was able to seek help from Romulo Lumabao, who happened to be the uncle of one of the victims.
Romulo quickly proceeded to the area and at the same time called up the Solana Police Station and reported that sand had collapsed near the Cagayan River.
Immediately, Solana PNP officers, led by Staff Sergeant Ronnie James T. Canapi and Patrolman Janno V. Gumapos, duty investigators, proceeded at the said area.
Responding police officers met one of the victims that was being transported by his uncle, Romulo Lumabao, using a motorcycle. The victim, A-Jay Lumabao, was transferred to the patrol car and was rushed to St. Paul Hospital in Tuguegarao City.
Then, the other victim was also pulled out of the collapsed sand and brought to St. Paul Hospital.
“Nadaganan ang mga biktima ng matigas na buhangin kaya naman mabilis na nagpasaklolo ang si Andrew Cambri na nooy mabilis na nakatayo at nakatakbo bago gumuho,” said Captain Isabelita Gano, spokesperson of Cagayan Provincial Police Office.
At about 11:37 p.m. of June 10, Niño Chris Baggayan expired while A-jay Lumabao expired at around 6:40 a.m. of June 11 while they were undergoing medical treatment at said hospital, according to the police.
