Mandaluyong barangay bakes 'flag cake' for Independence Day celebration

A sweet celebration was held for residents of Barangay Malamig, Mandaluyong City as officials showcased a big "flag cake" to mark the country's 124th Independence Day on Sunday, June 12.

The cake was a project of Barangay Malamig led by Councilor Cynthia Caluya and Barangay Malamig Chairman Marlon Manalo which serves as their contribution to the festivities.

The cake, baked and designed to resemble the Philippine flag, was nine feet long, five feet wide, and one feet thick. Caluya said the cake was able to fed around 1,000 people.

The barangay also made a similar flag cake for the Independence Day celebration in 2021, which they offered to frontliners in the city.

The cake was made for at least a week prior to the event, finishing its last designs on Saturday night, by some 10 bakers.

Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita "Menchie" Abalos led the ceremonial cake cutting, taking the first slice of the cake to formally open it for public consumption in front of the Chiskeyk's Cafe and Bakeshop at Dansalan Street at 10 a.m.

Eager residents lined up holding their own plates, containers, and utensils.

Mayor Abalos said the Independence Day celebration is not just for commemorating the past, but also for being grateful for the present, and helping unite and uplift the communities hand-in-hand with the local government.

She also said this program also serves as a kick off for the celebration of nutrition month in July.
