Philippine Eagle Foundation to transfer birds to new sanctuary in Davao City

PEF Development Program Manager Andi Baldonado said that the foundation wants to enforce an emergency transfer initially of its three breeding pairs of Philippines Eagles being kept at the center in Barangay Malagos as nearby communities pose risks to the safety of the birds.
The new location in Toril, owned by the city government of Davao, has an estimated area of 50 hectares, more than enough to ensure that there will be “buffer zones” around the facility.
She said that a usufruct will have to be entered into between the PEF and the local government before they can start the construction of the temporary enclosures where the breeding pairs will be housed.
Baldonado said the transfer is necessary to protect them from serious threats, including deadly avian flu, which could potentially wipe out their species.
“Our priority is to transfer first the eagles that are currently breeding. We have two or three – one pair is being introduced. We need to prioritize them so that they can continue to breed,” she said.
