Central Luzon police probe arrest of 100 farmers in Tarlac sugarcane plantation

CAMP OLIVAS, City of San Fernando, Pampanga – Police Regional Office (PRO)-3 (Central Luzon) director Police Brig. Gen. Matthew P. Baccay said Friday, June 10, that an investigation is under way to ascertain the facts in the arrest of 100 farmers in a sugarcane plantation in Concepcion, Tarlac last Thursday, June 9.

Investigation revealed that at about 9 a.m., Felino Cunanan Jr., 63; Chino Cunanan, 34; Abigail Bucad, 36, and Sonny Dimarucut, 45, all residents of Barangay Tinang, Concepcion; Sonny Magcalas, 58, of Sto. Niño, Concepcion; Pia Montalan, 39, of Tarlac City; and Alvin Dimarucut, 36, of San Vicente, Tarlac City, together with more than 90 individuals equipped with rotovator, arrived and demolished the sugarcane plantation owned by Agriculture Cooperative in Barangay Tinang.

Responding personnel from the Concepcion police, Philippine National Police-Special Action Force, 1st and 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, Tarlac Provincial Police Office-Intelligence Branch, 3rd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, Armored Division, Philippine Army, and Naval Intelligence and Security Group-Northern Luzon tried to stop the farmers from further destroying the plantation but they became unruly and prevented the law enforcers from performing their official duties.

The authorities arrested them for malicious mischief and obstruction of justice.
