The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is expected to bring rains over several areas in Visayas and Mindanao during the conduct of the national and local elections, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, May 9.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the ITCZ—a region where winds from the northeast and southeast converge that triggers thunderstorms and rains—will bring moderate to intense rains over Caraga and Davao Region in the next few hours.

Light to heavy rains may also affect Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and the rest of Mindanao.

PAGASA warned that under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are “highly or very highly” susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall.

It also urged the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned to take appropriate actions.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated afternoon or evening rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterly winds and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA advised the public to stay vigilant as severe thunderstorms may also trigger flash floods or landslides.
