Comelec cold to extending voting hours

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is not looking at extending the voting hours beyond 7 p.m.

This, despite the delays in voting in some areas.

"The extension of voting, at this point, is negative. Up until this time, the Comelec en Banc has decided that voting will be until 7 pm," said Comelec Commissioner George Garcia in a press briefing Monday, May 9.

"Nothing will justify extension of voting at this point," he added.

Comelec Commissioner Marlon Casquejo believes there is still enough time for voters to cast their votes especially since the number of voters per precinct have been reduced to 800.

"In my opinion, all these voters will be catered until 7 pm," he said.

The conduct of elections in some voting centers was delayed due to power outages.

Garcia, however, said that the brownouts in some areas was not that long as it only lasted for only about 15 minutes.
