Baldwin, Eagles eager to bounce back vs UP

Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin tipped his hats off to Goldwin Monteverde and University of the Philippines but expressed his eagerness to bounce back in Game 2 of the UAAP men's basketball Finals on Wednesday, May 11.

"We intend to get back to playing the way that we should play and we believe that we can turn this result around," said Baldwin after the Blue Eagles absorbed an 81-74 loss in overtime at the hands of the Fighting Maroons in Game 1 last Sunday, May 8.

"It's a three-game series for a reason so we intend to work our tails off and get this thing to a third game and do the very best we can to win the championship," added the three-time UAAP champion coach.

The Eagles suffered back-to-back losses from the same team that defeated them on Labor Day in their last game in the elimination round.

UP was the lone squad to hand Ateneo its first loss of the season which halted the reigning champion's 39-game win streak since October 2018.

The Maroons continued to play the spoiler's role after completing their Game 1 comeback behind the efforts of James Spencer, Zavier Lucero, and Ricci Rivero.

Taking pointers from their losses against UP, Baldwin said his wards needed more experience in closing out games.

"We just haven't had close games and we didn't play well in the critical moments of the game. We look disjointed, we didn't look cohesive at all, we were searching," said Baldwin. "UP certainly had the initiative with their defensive pressure. They didn't allow us to settle and we didn't settle.

"We made bad plays late in the regulation and in the overtime," he added.

More than that, the former Gilas Pilipinas head coach lamented Ateneo's late game performance after yielding 26 turnovers and posting an 11-of-25 shooting from the free throw line.

As "winnable" as it could get in the regulation, as Baldwin described, the Eagles crumbled in overtime when the Maroons clamped down on their defense and forced them to give up the ball multiple times off inbound plays and shotclock violations.

"It's almost like you're trying to lose when those numbers are present on the scoresheet," said the American-Kiwi mentor. "Certainly, there were some good numbers on the scoresheet in our favor but that's not indicative of the way that we normally play, the way that we certainly wanna play."

Baldwin goes back to the drawing board as the Eagles try to avoid a Finals sweep against the Maroons, who are a win away from ending their 36-year title drought
