De La Salle bucked a slow start and turned back reigning champion Ateneo with a 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 win in the UAAP Season 84 women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Thursday night, May 5.

The Lady Spikers came alive after avenging their first set loss behind the joint efforts of Baby Jyne Soreño, Alleiah Malaluan, Thea Gagate, and Fifi Sharma.
But it was Soreño who spelled the difference after scoring 17 points built on 13 attacks and three blocks.
Malaluan fired 13 of 15 points off kills, Gagate added 11 points, while Sharma had 10 points.
"For us, usually and hardest game namin is the first one, and its very important for us. Of course, our team is new so lahat ng adjustment talaga kailangan gawin and nagkataon lang na Ateneo rin kaagad ‘yung kalaban," said De La Salle assistant coach Benson Bocboc, who filled in for head coach Ramil de Jesus in the post-game press conference.
"Kaya 'yong first set, up to actually second set, adjustment period pa rin. So nagkataon lang mga brakes din napunta sa team, so 'yon kaya tuloy-tuloy buti na lang nakuha natin 'yong panalo, nakuha ng mga players 'yong composure throughout the third and fourth sets."
Faith Nisperos led the Blue Eagles with 24 points, powered by 19 attacks, three service aces, and two blocks while Lyann De Guzman chipped in 11 points.
Nisperos anchored Ateneo in the fourth frame and could have forced a decisive fifth set after trailing by two points only, 22-20.
Malaluan, however, delivered back-to-back conversions before Nisperos committed a costly attack error which enabled De La Salle to get a 1-0 record while Ateneo suffered the opposite and fell to a 0-1 slate.
De La Salle squares off with Adamson on Saturday, May 7 at 12 noon while Ateneo takes on National University at their 10 a.m. encounter.
