PH Red Cross gives new homes to 165 families displaced by lahar flooding

A total of 165 families in Daraga and Guinobatan, Albay who lost their homes due to lahar flooding were given new homes by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

PRC has recently handed the displaced families their certificate of occupancy for their new homes.

Due to Super Typhoon Rolly and the eruption of Mayon Volcano, lahar flooding occurred in Albay. The volcano erupted in 2018 while the typhoon made landfall in 2020.

The PRC said the relocation site in Bubulusan, Guinobatan is assessed to be safe, compared to the locations of the beneficiaries’ homes before the onslaught of the super typhoon.

According to the PRC, each house costs over P200,000.

Each family was also given the first tranche of P10,000 cash assistance to help them rehabilitate their livelihoods, the humanitarian organization said.

The PRC said it partnered with local governments in Albay and various government agencies, such as the Albay provincial human settlement office and the provincial engineering office to make the housing project possible.

To make this housing project possible, the PRC also partnered with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Canadian Red Cross, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, British Embassy, Thai Red Cross, Spanish Red Cross, Singapore Red Cross, and online donors.

PRC Chairman Richard J. Gordon Sr. initiated the search for a suitable and safe place to relocate those displaced by the lahar flooding, right after the damage assessment in Albay.

“Gusto natin makabangon kaagad ang tao. Sabi ko nga kay Governor Bichara, kailangan ko ng lote na malaki, na pwede paglagyan ng mga tao (We want the people to quickly get back on their feet. I told Governor Bichara that I need a big lot where we can relocate the people),”he said.

“At dali-dali naman, umaksyon na kaagad si Governor Bichara. At ngayon, nalagay na natin dun ‘yung mga bahay para sa mga pamilyang nawalan ng tahanan dahil sa lahar na dulot ng Super Typhoon Rolly at Mt. Mayon eruption (Immediately, Governor Bichara acted on it. And now, we have already built the houses for the families displaced due to the lahar caused by Super Typhoon Rolly and Mt. Mayon).”
