DOH reminds public to ensure food safety

The Department of Health (DOH) reminded the public to be thorough in handling and serving food after several people were reportedly hospitalized in South Cotabato due to suspected food poisoning.

It was reported that 70 people were hospitalized last Sunday after eating food given out during a political gathering in Barangay Tasiman, South Cotabato.

"The DOH through the Center for Health Development Soccsksargen is working with local health officers to care for patients while the matter is investigated thoroughly," the state health agency said in a statement on Wednesday, May 4.

During the dry season, food gets easily spoiled because of the hot weather, the DOH said.

The public should "always inspect any food or beverage that will be served, to ensure safety," it said.

"Follow food safety guidelines, including wearing of food-grade gloves, hair net, mouth covers; hand and utensil washing/sterilization; use of fresh produce; and avoiding the mixing of cooked and uncooked products," the DOH said.

"Store food in cool and dry places away from direct sunlight. As much as possible, keep food refrigerated until consumption," it added.

The DOH also advised the public to seek medical assistance if they experience symptoms of food poisoning.

"For any symptoms such as stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever after consumption of a meal, please consult the nearest clinic or hospital," it said.
