PH SEAG winners to pay courtesy call at Malacañang

President Duterte will honor all the Filipino medalists in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in a ceremony Tuesday night at the Malacañang Palace.

Expected to attend are more or less 400 Filipino athletes, coaches and officials who helped the country finish fourth in the biennial meet following a 52-gold, 70-silver and 105-bronze medal harvest.

Reports said the incentives they were due – around P32.4 million in all – will be given in the event scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Under Republic Act No. 10699, otherwise known as the National Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Act, an athlete is rewarded P300,000 for every individual gold medal won while a silver and bronze are worth P150,000 and P60,000 each.

There is also that possibility that the Chief Executive could add some monetary bonus the same way he has done in past international events like the Tokyo Olympics, the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and past SEA Games editions in Manila in 2019 and Kuala Lumpur in 2017.

Of all medal winners, world champion gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo stands to receive the heftiest sum having scooped up a whopping five gold medals and a couple of silver, which were worth around P1.7 million.

The feat in Hanoi was the best finish by the country in the biennial meet outside of the Philippines since winding up second overall in the 1983 Singapore edition.

Host Vietnam grabbed the overall championship after reaping 205 golds, 125 silvers and 116 bronzes. Thailand finished at distant second (92-103-136) followed by Indonesia (69-91-81).
