PCG traces possible source of fire in ill-fated MV Mercraft 2
A highly combustible material was found in the deck of MV Mercraft 2 which possibly became the source of the fire that burned the fast craft vessel while sailing in Real, Quezon last week, killing seven passengers.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) have conducted a joint investigation to determine the cause of the blaze, Admiral Artemio Abu, PCG Commandant, said on Monday, May 30.
“Based on our investigation, there was a highly combustible material in the deck of the MV Mercraft 2. Due to exposure to heat, there is a possibility that it was ignited,” Abu disclosed.
The PCG chief did not give further details as to the exact type of material he was referring to.
However, he assured the public that the PCG and MARINA will continuously coordinate as the probe progresses.
“We are conducting the necessary investigation to find out how we can maintain safety at sea,” Abu said.
