Galvez eyes Covid-free elections

With less than a week to go before the May 9 elections, National Task Force (NTF) Against Covid-19 Chief Implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. urged the unvaccinated voters to get inoculated and have their booster shots to keep the polls safe and free from Covid-19.

At President Duterte’s pre-recorded Talk to the People public address that aired Tuesday, May 3, Galvez said that the government not only wants the upcoming national and local elections to be secure from security threats but also free from coronavirus infections.

The vaccine czar noted that one way to minimize the spread of the virus is to get the anti-Covid shot.

“We are calling those who haven’t taken those vaccines or boosters to be vaccinated because we want the incoming elections on Monday not just honest and orderly but also safe from Covid-19,” Galvez said.

As of May 2, a total of 67,911,464 individuals have already been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Meanwhile, a total of 13,231,643 individuals have received their booster shot or third shot while 7,430 more have been administered with a second booster shot or fourth shot.

Galvez was elated with the turnout of the vaccination on the adult population since about 94 percent of individuals aged 18 to 59 years old have been fully vaccinated.

Around 80 percent of individuals aged 60 and above have also received two doses of the anti-Covid vaccines.

“Mayroon pa po tayong isang linggo para manawagan sa ating mga kababayan na hindi pa nababakunahan. Magpabakuna na po tayo at magpabooster na po para siguradong ang ating eleksyon ay ligtas sa Covid (We still have one week to go to encourage our unvaccinated countrymen. Let us all get vaccinated and have our booster shot to ensure that the elections will be free from Covid),” Galvez appealed to the public.

Around 67 million Filipinos are expected to troop to polling precincts nationwide on May 9 to cast their votes and choose the country's next set of leaders including the president, vice president, and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as local government officials.
