One dies as 2 former policemen engage in gun duel in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY – A retired policeman was killed by his neighbor who is also a retired cop after they exchanged gunfire on Wednesday afternoon (May 25) in San Isidro, Leyte. A 15-year old boy was also wounded in the incident.

Candido Barda, 67, surrendered to the authorities after killing his neighbor Materno Ralia, 60, in Barangay Capiñahan. Both Barda and Ralia are retired policemen.

Police probers disclosed that Barda allegedly got irked as he was being followed by Ralia’s alleged errand boy.

Sensing the boy was following him on Ralia’s order, Barda allegedly punched the minor.

Upon hearing what happened, Ralia's wife went outside their house and confronted Barda.

A few minutes later, Ralia, who was armed with an undetermined firearm, went to the house of the Barda. However, Barda, who was also armed with a gun, was already waiting outside his house.

The two former cops then immediately exchanged gunfire upon seeing each other in a sort of duel that resulted in the wounding of Ralia on different parts of the body. The boy, who ran towards Ralia, was also hit on the leg.

Both Ralia and the boy were immediately brought to the Tabango Community Hospital in Tabango, Leyte where the former was pronounced dead on arrival.

Barda voluntarily surrendered to San Isidro Municipal Police Station along with his firearm.

It was learned that Barda and Ralia had old personal animosity towards each other.
