Pimentel: Duterte should let BBM choose his own officials

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III on Wednesday (May 25) said President Duterte should give presumptive President Ferdinand ‘’Bongbong’’ R. Marcos Jr. the option to appoint his own officials.

Pimentel issued the statement on the possibility that some, if not one, nominee of the Duterte administration might be bypassed by the powerful bicameral Commission on Appointments (CA).

The CA is scheduled to act on recommendations of its committees which may seek the bypass or confirmation of the appointees of President Duterte when it meets in its last plenary session on June 1, two days before the Senate and the House of Representatives adjourn sine die on June 3.

"President Duterte should give presumptive President (Ferdinand) Bongbong Marcos (Jr.) the option to appoint his own choice of people: Better policy is for the incumbent/outgoing President to let the incoming president choose the officials, if bypassed (by the CA) at this time," Pimentel said.

The public hearing by the CA committee on constitutional commissions and offices chaired by Senator Cynthia A. Villar on the fitness of the presidential nominees this morning was cut short on request of three lawmakers - Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senator Panfillo M. Lacson and Representative Ronaldo Zamora, CA deputy chairman.

Their request to have the public hearing reset was because of the on-going congressional canvass of the votes cast in the May 9, 2022 presidential and vice presidential elections.

Rizalina Noval Justol had just finished giving her statement on why her appointment ss Commission on Audit (COA) chairwoman should be confirmed when the CA received the request of the three lawmakers to the Villar committee to reschedule its public hearing.

Other nominees are Karlo Alexei Bendigo Nograles, as Civil Service Commission (CSC) chairman; Saidamen Pangarungan as Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman; George Erwin M. Garcia as Comelec commissioner; and Aimee S. Torrefranca-Neri as Comelec commissioner.

Senate Minority Leader Franklin M. Drilon had stated that he would grill Neri when she appears before the CA committee.

There were also 60 general/flag and senior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) scheduled to face the CA national defense committee next week.
