De Lima prays for Ople's good health as she accepts Dep't of Migrant Workers chief post

Opposition Senator Leila de Lima has lauded presumptive president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s decision to offer to Susan “Toots” Ople to head the newly created Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

“If the incoming administration is to make good on their promises to our migrant workers, there is no better choice than Toots Ople,” de Lima said in a statement.

“She is truly her father’s daughter. The late Senate President Blas Ople made a career championing labor rights, and Toots spent her life continuing her family’s legacy,” de Lima added.

The senator said Ople has the heart and brains to take on such critical work as shepherding the DMW as her life-long work advocating for overseas Filipino workers (OFW) rights and concerns makes her the best choice for the job.

Ople heads the Blas F. Ople Policy Center and Training Institute, a non-profit organization (NGO) that tackles labor and migration issues.

De Lima said she can only hope that Ople would be in good health as she takes on the challenge. Ople had earlier disclosed she is battling second stage breast cancer and has undergone chemotherapy and PET scans.

Ople, in various radio interviews, admitted that her battle with cancer was a factor in whether or not she would accept the post offered to her by the incoming Marcos administration.

“I pray for Toots’ good health so that she may be able to take on this challenge. For our country’s sake and especially those of the OFWs,” de Lima said.
