Comelec to wait for China's response before conducting polls in Shanghai

As there is still a Covid-19 lockdown in China, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is still waiting for the permission of the host country before holding overseas elections in Shanghai.

Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex C. Laudiangco on Monday, May 23, said the Comelec has already asked China for permission to conduct polls in Shanghai.

“So far wala pa po (there’s no response yet). Hinihintay po natin ‘yung resulta ng ating request sa host country (We’re still waiting for the response of the host counrty) . Iyan talaga ‘yung (That’s the ) dependency sa (in) Shanghai, ‘yung (the) allowance ng (of the) host country for us to conduct the special elections there,” he said during a press briefing.

“We’ll wait po. And the decision of the en banc will come immediately after ng response ng host country,” he added.

Comelec said there are 1,991 registered Filipino overseas voters in Shanghai.

Poll Commissioner George Erwin M. Garcia said they will study if the poll body will still conduct elections in Shanghai, China.

Strict lockdown has been imposed in China since March, confining some 25 million residents to their homes.
