After 'Queen' routine, FEU Cheering Squad switches to 'Francis M'

Minutes after winning the cheerdance title in UAAP Season 84, Far Eastern University Cheering Squad already has the next theme in mind.

FEU Cheering Squad, which ended its 13-year title drought with a routine inspired by British rock band Queen led by vocalist Freddie Mercury, chose no less than the "King of Philippine Rap."

"Actually, meron na kami next year," said FEU head coach Randell San Gregorio, hinting few teasers to the press at the media hall at Mall of Asia Arena Sunday, May 22. "Next year, we'll do Francis M. Next season.

"Walang tago-tago. It's pointless to hide tapos may kapareho. Tapos sasabihin nanggaya ka pa. But I don't really mind kung may kapareho kami. Every one is entitled to use every concept naman," added the first-time UAAP champion coach.

FEU Cheering Squad proved that there's a new king in town behind its flawless Queen performance as it did not sustain any penalty or deductions.

The Morayta-based squad topped all the departments, namely tumbling (91.5), stunts (93), tosses (90.5), pyramids (91), and dance (361.5), for a total of 727.5 points.

Adamson Pep Squad, which came in first runner-up, did not incur any penalties as well but fell short overall as it garnered 688.5 points, a far cry from FEU's haul.

San Gregorio revealed that the theme, Queen, was already determined even before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The reason? He's a huge fan of the band itself and the legendary Freddie Mercury.

"Hindi namin ugali 'yong isikerto 'yong tema. Nilalabas ko kasi baka maunahan pa kami. 'Yon talaga rason ko," said San Gregorio. "Lahat naman ng coaches creative, lahat kami may idea kami kung ano maganda, ano swak. Bago pa kami maunahan, nilalabas ko na. Kung may kapareho okay lang din."

There is no better way to cap off a performance but to impersonate Mercury himself as one member posed with the signature long mic stand to end the three-minute routine.

"'Yong Queen, bago pa mag-pandemic 'yon talaga 'yong gusto namin. Kasi I've always been a fan of their music especially Freddie Mercury. Iba talaga 'yong music nila... timeless," he added.
