NPC officials solidify support for Romualdez's speakership bid

Officials of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) have formalized the party’s support towards the Speakership bid of Majority Floor Leader and Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez.

NPC leadership and party members–including NPC chairman and Senate President Vicente Sotto III; SecGen. Mark Mendoza; Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga; Rizal 1st District Rep. Jack Duavit; and Senator-elect Chiz Escudero–met with Romualdez during an NPC “fellowship dinner” to galvanize the party’s support for the House Leader on Saturday, May 21.

"With the authority given to me, I hereby declare that the Nationalist People's Coalition in the House of Representatives will support the speakership of Martin Romualdez. I mentioned it before, but tonight (Saturday) we make it official," Sotto said on May 21.

"We assure you that this party has always been there, strong, will remain strong and under the leadership of the new Speaker Martin Romualdez, I'm sure that we will have a very good 19th Congress in the House of Representatives," Sotto continued.

Sotto previously announced the NPC's support for Romualdez last May 15.

NPC members–Escudero and Duavit included– followed suit and voiced their support for Romualdez’ Speakership bid.

Romualdez thanked the party for their support and reiterated his UniTeam allies’ flagship rhetoric of unity.

"We will have a great partnership with the Senate and of course in consonance with the legislative agenda of the administration. I am sure that at the heels of this pandemic, we will be at the road to recovery not just health wise, but economically, that's what we look forward,” said Romualdez.

“The theme of the campaign of (presumptive) President (Ferdinand) BBM (Marcos Jr.])was unity and that's what I envision most in NPC, you always have this unity in the party, tonight I see this unity, I see this unity spreading not just within Congress, but within the country," Romualdez concluded.

Aside from the NPC, parties such as the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the National Unity Party (NUP), the Nacionalista party (NP), and Romualdez’ native Lakas–CMD have endorsed the lawmaker for House Speaker.

The massive support among fellow lawmakers and political parties for Romualdez’ Speakership bid has been dubbed a “supermajority,” with some solons going as far as calling it an “ultra majority.”
