Reigning SEAG champ Delarmino advances to muay thai final

Judokas add 1 silver, 2 bronzes

Phillip Delarmino moved one win away from striking another gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games.

Delarmino outclassed Kay Ketnouvong of Laos in the semifinal of the muay thai 57kg category in the 31st SEA Games at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam Saturday, May 21.

Delarmino, who is both the reigning SEAG gold medalist and the 2021 world champion, showed explosiveness from the get-go and unloaded solid hooks to thwart Ketnouvong, the 2019 bronze medalist in the biennial regional meet.

The second round saw several clinches as both fighters capitalized on the situation by throwing knee strikes at each other.

Delarmino looked for the kill in the third and last frame as the muay thai world champion used speedy footwork and finally mixed in some strong leg kicks to his combinations.

He wasn't able to get a knockout but it was enough to get a convincing 2-1 score en route to the gold medal round.

Delarmino set a finals rematch against home bet Nguyen Doan Long, who beat Thai foe Chainarong Yawanophat in the other semifinal, on Sunday, May 22

Rudzma Abubakar and April Joy La Madrid also settled for bronze medals in the women's 48kg and 60kg, respectively.

Meanwhile in judo, Daryl John Mercado fell short against Vietnamese Nguyen Hoang Thanh in the -55kg final to clinch another silver for the national judo team.

After a few scramble on the mat, Nguyen pinned down Mercado at the 2:44 mark of the golden score round and never let go en route to an ippon for the win at 3:09.

Lopez sisters, Ma. Jeanalane and Leah, also settled for bronze in the women's -45kg and -48kg categories, respectively.
