PH inks agreement with Hungary to boost vocational education and training

The Philippines and Hungary signed a memorandum of agreement (MOU) on vocational education and training (VET) that aims to develop both countries’ capacities to respond to the “changing demands of the labor market.”

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó signed the MOU at the sidelines of the recent 2022 International Migration Forum held in New York, US.

“MOU covers cooperation in the areas of VET systems, development of competency standards, assessment and certification in VET, strengthening businesses’ participation in VET, mobility programmes, R&D, and human resources development programmes in VET,” a tweet from the New York-based Philippine Mission to the United Nations said.

The signing of the MOU is the latest milestone in the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Hungary which will mark its 50th year in 2023.

A copy of the MOU, posted on Twitter by the Philippine Mission to the UN, said the partnership was made to develop cooperation in vocational education and training.

“Recognising that the challenges posed by the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, digitalization, robotization, automation, climate-change have regional and global character which require a modern and constantly developing Vocational Education and Training as well as Adult Learning systems to respond quickly to the rapidly changing demands of the labor market,” the MOU read.

It added that VET would mutually benefit both countries and further strengthen their cooperation.

The Philippines’ Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Hungary’s Ministry of Innovation and Technology will implement the agreement.

TESDA Director Isidro Lapeña supports signing of the MOU, the tweet said.

Locsin and Szijjártó also discussed the political, financial, and economic relations, including common positions on multilateral issues.

The DFA chief thanked the Minister for treating some 700 Filipinos in Hungary well.
