PH boxers Ladon, Marcial, Magno, Bautista go for gold

National boxers Rogen Ladon, Eumir Felix Marcial, Irish Magno and Ian Clark Bautista gun for the gold on Sunday, May 22, in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Ladon, Marcial and Magno—all Olympic veterans—and Bautista remain in the hunt for the gold at the Bac Ninh Gymnasium after five other boxers, including Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio, were eliminated in their respective semifinal bouts.

Ladon, a 2016 Rio Olympian, and Magno, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian, face home bets Van Thao Tran and Nguyen Thi Tham of Vietnam in the men's flyweight (48-52kg) and women's flyweight (48-51kg), respectively.

The 28-year-old Ladon is set to defend his SEA Games title while Magno figures in a rematch against Nguyen since settling for silver in the 2019 biennial regional meet here in the Philippines.

Marcial, who clinched bronze medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games, takes on Timor Leste's Delio Anzaqeci Mouzinho in the men's middleweight (69-75kg) to retain his status as the reigning SEA Games champion.

Meanwhile, Bautista is just a win away from improving his bronze medal finish in 2019 when he battles Naing Latt of Myanmar in the men's bantamweight (52-57kg).

Petecio out

Petecio, unfortunately, failed to defend her SEA Games crown and got the boot in the semifinal after absorbing a controversial 4-1 loss against Vietnamese Tran Thi Linh last May 20.

The 30-year-old Petecio trailed after the first round as she found her groove too late and was on the defensive stance most of the time.

The second round proved to be costly for the defending gold medalist as the Vietnamese earned the nod of the judges despite Petecio seemingly landing the clearer punches.

Looking for a knockout in the third frame, Petecio peppered her rival with hefty body shots and powerful hooks in the late game but couldn’t get as many points needed to slice Tran’s lead in the judges’ scorecard.

Still, Ed Picson, Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president, was utterly disappointed.

"This certainly was not what we expected but there were several factors that came into play. Obviously we’re disappointed,” said Picson.

Marcial, Petecio's pal and teammate, also echoed Picson's sentiments and said the crowd seemed to add favor to the judges' taste.

"Wala mga idol. Naluto mga idol. Naluto tayo sa score, grabe. Klaro naman 'yong panalo," said Marcial during his Facebook live session airing Petecio's bout.

"Nakakapanghinayang po 'yong desisyon dahil... oo 'yong first round pwedeng sabihn natin 3-2 lamang 'yong kalaban pero second round and last round kay Nesthy po talaga," he added.
