Go on an adventure with these sneakers made with pineapple fiber

Lakat Sustainables' footwear now comes in more vibrant hues

Launched in 2021 by enviro-social entrepreneurs Mike and Banj Claparols, Lakat Sustainables made rounds in the local fashion scene with its take on sustainable footwear made with a very Filipino material—pineapple fibers. This time, the brand introduces a new color story that invites everyone to put their best foot forward with hues that are fun, vibrant, and all about having an adventure.

Lakat Sustainable sneakers in Cosmos, Ether, and Daytime

For its spring-summer offering, the homegrown brand dyes its low-cut and high-top sneakers in three new colors. First is the Daytime with an intense shade of yellow, an easy way to add sunshine to any ensemble. Next is the Ether, a cool slate of gray inspired by dynamic scenes of summer in the city. Lastly, the Cosmos, a pair in a deep tone of navy that captures the magic of summer evenings under the stars.

Lakat Sustainables hails its name from a Hiligaynon and Cebuano term which in English means “walk” or “to take a stroll or a leisure walk” or to “leave one’s home to go to public places.” At its core is ethical fashion, and it does it by using discarded leaves typically thrown after harvesting pineapples and working with handloom weavers of Kabankalan in southern Negros. This makes its products vegan, environment-friendly, and definitely champions Filipino artisans.

“Within the sustainable fashion space, introducing new colorways is often a primary challenge,” the brand says. “Typically, dyes are made using toxic chemicals, petroleum, and coal. Lakat Sustainables works only with azo-free dyes, which are eco-friendly. When applied to fabrics, they absorb faster, thereby reducing water consumption. Key players in the sustainable movement have opted for azo-free dyes in their production methods in lieu of chemicals.”

The newest colors from Lakat Sustainables along with your favorite styles will be showcased at Katutubo until May 22, at the Bench Tower, 30th Street, Taguig.
