Rain showers, thunderstorms to persist in several Mindanao areas due to LPA, ITCZ

Cloudy skies, scattered rains showers, and thunderstorms will prevail over Caraga, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen in the next 24 hours because of the prevalence of a low pressure area (LPA) and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, May 2.

As of 4 a.m., the LPA that is embedded along the ITCZ was estimated at 40 kilometers south-southwest of General Santos City.

PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the LPA still has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours but could still bring significant rains over some parts of Mindanao.

PAGASA warned those in Caraga, Davao Region, and Soccksargen to remain vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides because of the occurrence of moderate to heavy rains.

Scattered moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms may also affect Batanes and Babuyan Islands due to the frontal system.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the easterlies and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA advised the public to stay vigilant during severe thunderstorms, which are often associated with bursts of heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds that usually last up to two hours, as these may trigger flash floods or landslides.
