Eid'l Fitr national holiday on May 3 declared

After a long wait over the weekend, Malacañang finally released Proclamation No. 1356, declaring May 3, 2022, a regular holiday in the entire country in observance of Eid'l Fitr or the Feast of Ramadhan.

The proclamation, released on May 2, was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on May 1. He initially confirmed the holiday declaration on Sunday evening via a text message to Palace reporters.

President Duterte decided to declare May 3 a holiday throughout the country "to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid'l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness."

The Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta', the Islamic religious authority in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), declared that Eid’l Fitr, or the Feast of Breaking the Fast, will be celebrated on May 2.

According to Sheikh Abuhuraira Udasan, executive director of the Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta’ and Bangsamoro Grand Mufti, the moon crescent was sighted when a moon sighting was conducted on Sunday, May 1—the 29th day of Ramadan.

Before this, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended declaring May 3 a national holiday in observance of the Feast of Ramadhan.

The Muslim world celebrates Eid'l Fitr for three days after the end of the month of fasting. It is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide as it marks the end of Ramadan or the Islamic holy month of fasting.

In the country, Eid'l Fitr has been recognized by the Philippine government as a regular holiday under Republic Act No. 9177, also according to Presidential Proclamation No. 1083, signed into law on November 13, 2002.

Some Filipino Muslims celebrate and observe Eid'l Fitr at the Manila Golden Mosque in Quiapo, Manila, while Muslim communities in Mindanao stage large public celebrations.

Eid'l Fitr, also the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal, signifies the Muslims' successful journey towards spiritual purification through month-long fasting.
