Bong Go to DMW transition panel: Settle internal conflict, prioritize OFW's welfare

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has called on members of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Transition Committee to settle their internal conflicts and remain true to their mandated duty of protecting and promoting the welfare of the Filipino migrant workers.

Go, author and co-sponsor of Republic Act 11641 or the Department made the strong appeal following the disagreement between DMW Secretary Abdullah Mama-o and Department of Labor and Employment Secretary (DOLE) Silvestre Bello III over which department has the standing authority to impose and/or lift the ban on the deployment of Filipino workers abroad.

As author and co-sponsor of Republic Act 11641 or the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Act, Go said he is disappointed over the recent disagreements between the department heads, which is already affecting OFWs.

The senator said it is crucial to follow what is stated under the DMW Act.

“Kung ano ang nakasaad sa batas, yun ang sundin. Kung may hindi pagkakaintindihan, may panahon at proseso naman upang klaruhin ang mga ito. Ang importante rito ay hindi masayang ang layunin ng pagtatatag ng DMW (Follow what is stated in the law. If there are misunderstandings, there’s a time and process to clarify things. What is important is to preserve the intention of the law),” Go said.

“A day wasted squabbling among ourselves about the finer provisions of the law is a day lost serving our people who have to leave their families behind and work in far-away lands just to give them a brighter future,” he stressed.

Go is one of the senators who have been persistent on the need to create the DMW and has early on urged the government precisely to ensure that there will be no disruption in the delivery of services to Filipino migrant workers during the process of consolidating the offices that would be under the DMW.

Under the DMW law, all functions, assets and funds of agencies in charge of OFW-related matters are gradually absorbed by the DMW under a two-year transition period currently being led by the Transition Committee.

Meanwhile, Go said he is committed to fight for the rights and advance the welfare of all the hardworking Filipinos, especially the OFWs, healthcare workers and economic frontliners as the country celebrates Labor Day.

“Your sacrifices, dedication and love of family and country deserve continued improvement of government programs and services,” he said.

“As a senator, I reiterate my commitment to continue fighting for your rights and advancing your welfare, both inside and outside the hallowed halls of the Senate,” Go stressed.
