Remain in my love

REFLECTIONS TODAY We continue to read the meaning of the “Vine and the Branches” image in today’s Gospel. Though there was no mention of the word “love” in yesterday’s Gospel, the repeated reference to love here highlights the centrality of love in the whole discourse. In fact, the passage on the vine and branches must be interpreted in terms of love. It is through love that the disciples are inserted and are able to participate in the communion shared by Jesus and the Father. Hence, Jesus’ exhortation for them to remain in his love. It gives Jesus great joy to enfold his disciples in this communion. Interestingly, Jesus refers to a kind of love that the disciples need to dwell in: “my love.” Love takes many forms. Love can be selfish, especially if the person keeps on referring to himself. Jesus would like his disciples to learn from his way of loving and not from their own definition of love. This pure love, the disciples will eventually see on the cross. Do you make Jesus’ love the model of your love?
