PH Red Cross urges the public to follow precautionary measures this rainy season

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) encouraged the public to take usual safety measures after the state weather bureau officially announced the start of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) also warned that the current La Niña may increase the chance of above-normal rainfall conditions in some parts of the country.

PRC, led by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Senator Richard Gordon, advised everyone to keep in mind the organization's 4Ps: Predict, Plan, Prepare, and Practice.

It also assured the public that they are ready to respond to any circumstances this current rainy season.

“Laging handa ang Red Cross sa anumang sakuna ngayong tag-ulan. Hinihikayat ko rin ang ating mga kababayan na laging sundin ang proper hygiene at sanitation upang maiwasan ang mga sakit dulot ng palagiang pag-ulan (Red Cross is always prepared for any danger this rainy season. I'm also encouraging my fellow countrymen to always follow proper hygiene and sanitation habits to prevent any diseases brought by constant rainfall),” Gordon said in a statement Thursday, May 19.

Keeping up with its mantra “Volunteers + Logistics + Information Technology = a Red Cross that is Always First, Always Ready, Always There,” PRC has maintained its operations with modern equipment ready to deliver timely services in emergencies caused by heavy rainfall.

In preparation for rescue and relief operations this season, PRC said that the following assets will be mobilized:

• Pre-positioned items (food and non-food)
• 32 food trucks
• 179 ambulance units
• 5 rescue trucks
• 34 rescue boats
• 2 amphibians
• 7 payloaders
• 5 six-by-six trucks
• 8 humvees
• 15 firetrucks
• 6 fire tanker trucks
• 2 military jeeps

Moreover, PRC also has 17 Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) hubs handled by trained volunteers and staff as well as water treatment units, and hygiene promotion materials.

Some hubs are also prepared with standby water tankers for WASH-related emergencies, PRC assured. (Luisa Cabato)
