Why is Bongbong in Australia?

Presumptive president Bongbong Marcos and his family are in Australia for a "much-needed vacation", Marcos's spokesperson and chief-of-staff Vic Rodriguez said in a press conference Tuesday, May 17.

"It’s a private trip made by president-elect Bongbong with his family and yes it was confirmed by no less than by our ambassador Philippine Ambassador to Australia her excellency Hellen De La Vega," Rodriguez told reporters.

He also revealed that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called Marcos on Tuesday morning (Philippine time) to send a "congratulatory message" on his apparent victory in the May 9 elections as well as the "integrity" of the polls.

"Of course he (Morrison) affirmed yung kanilang gobyerno na patuloy na mainit at close interaction at pakikipag-ugnayan sa pamahalaan ng Republika ng Pilipinas at pagbati na rin sa malinaw at malinis na tagumpay ni President-elect Bongbong (his government's continued warm and close interaction with the government of the Republic of the Philippines and also greeted President-elect Bongbong's clear and clean victory)," he said.

Rodriguez said the presumptive Philippine leader come back home Thursday. "I think he's--in total--he's just out for three-and-a-half days for a much-needed vacation"

The three-and-a-half-day Australia trip coincided with Marcos's son Vinny's birthday, which also took place Tuesday.

"Again it’s a private visit, a private trip at nais lang nilang i-enjoy yung mga nalalabing araw bilang pribadong mamamayan at bago pormal at opisyal na manungkulan si President-elect Bongbong bilang pinuno at pangulo ng ating bansa (and they just want enjoy their remaining days as private citizens before President-elect Bongbong formally takes up his duty as leader and president of our country)," Rodriguez said.

Marcos's inauguration is on June 30, 2022, although Rodriguez admitted during the same presser that there is still no official site for the much-anticipated event.
