Inmate tagged in scamming using BBM spox not under BJMP custody

The person deprived of liberty (PDL) involved in the computer-related identity theft and online fraud committed against the spokesperson of incoming president Ferdinand “Bongbong’’ Marcos Jr. is not under the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

In a message, BJMP spokesperson Jail Supt. Xavier Solda said that inmate Ryan Ace Castillejo also known as Jose Villafuerte Angeles and Kiko was released by the bureau and transferred to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Nov. 11, 2021.

He issued the clarification as some sectors are unaware or are confused that the inmates placed in the BJMP are those with still unresolved cases while PDLs at the BuCor run jails are those already convicted by the courts.

Lawyer Vic Rodriguez, in a news report over ABS-CBN, stressed that the government needs to improve the prison protocols after alleged scammer Castillejo was nabbed inside a detention facility.

He noted having received information that the scammer who used his name to send bogus messages was identified to be an inmate inside a detention center in Bicutan.

"I was told na nasa maximum detention facility pa yung tao (the person is in the maximum detention facility)," Rodriguez said.

This is not the first time the entry of illegal items and contraband has been an issue in Philippine prisons. (Chito A. Chavez)
