Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Cagayan — Phivolcs

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Cagayan at around 4:42 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 31 kilometers (km) southeast of Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan, and was shallow at a depth of 16 km.

It initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.4 but later revised it to 5.1.

Phivolcs said the quake was “moderately strong” at Intensity IV in Calayan. Cagayan.

It was also felt as a “weak” tremor at Intensity III in Pasuquin, Bacarra, and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, and Sanchez Mira in Cagayan.

Its instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity II in Claveria Cagayan and Intensity I in Gonzaga, Cagayan.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
