Gun, bladed weapons, marijuana found in QC jail after riot

Operatives of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) seized a firearm, improvised weapons, marijuana and other contraband during a surprise inspection in Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory (QCJMD).

The search dubbed “operation greyhound” was conducted following a riot among rival gangs inside the QCJMD on May 13. The rumble left one inmate dead and 11 others injured.

The QCJMD said that based on intelligence information, the riot was instigated by members of the Batang City Jail gang allegedly to force the removal of the current jail warden and other personnel, and to control the illegal drug trade in the facility.

The search operation targeted the detention cells of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) involved in the incident.

Authorities confiscated a .38-caliber revolver, 30 ammunition, 700 grams of marijuana bricks, 24 sachets with marijuana, 12 candles used for sealing the marijuana sachets, three packs of plastic for marijuana packaging, an improvised plastic sachet sealer, and 99 pieces of tobacco.

Also seized were 84 improvised bladed weapons, 30 ice picks, 46 Indian arrows made of concrete nails, nine slingshots, 104 concrete nails, five cell phones, six charger adaptors, five charger cords, a smartwatch, one Bluetooth speaker, three headsets, two scissors, a lighter, and 23 screwdrivers and pliers.

It was the biggest haul of deadly weapons, illegal drugs and other items retrieved from the facility, according to the QCJMD.

Jail officials said the operatives had to smash solid walls and floors, and do excavation works in order to get the contrabands hidden under concrete pavements.

A total of 405 PDLs were transferred to the jail in Bicutan to ensure the safety and peace in the facility.
