Wong defends taijijian crown, wins 1st gold for PH wushu team

Agatha Wong captured the first gold medal for the Philippine wushu team after a successful title defense in the women's taolu taijijian event of the 31st Southeast Asian Games at the Cau Giay Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam Sunday, May 15.

Wong landed a 1-2 finish after settling for silver medal in the women's taijiquan event on Saturday, May 14.

The 23-year-old Wong, who scored 9.71, won by a very small margin against home bets runners-up Thi Minh Huyen Tran and Tran Thi Kieu Trang.

Thi Minh delivered silver with 9.70 while Tran Thi followed suit with 9.69 for host Vietnam.

Wong, who was a silver medalist in the 2015 World Championships in Jakarta, had her best SEA Games stint here in the Philippines in 2019 where she ruled both the taijijian and the taijiquan events.

During the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wong had opposite results compared this year as she bagged gold in the taijiquan and silver in the taijijan.

The product of De La Salle-College of St. Benilde is also a bronze medalist in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.
