ITCZ to bring scattered rain showers, thunderstorms over parts of Visayas, Mindanao

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)—an area where winds from the northeast and southeast converge that triggers thunderstorms and rains—will prevail over several areas in Visayas and Mindanao in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, May 15.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will affect Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Eastern Visayas, and Central Visayas.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides that may occur during severe thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the frontal system will bring cloudy skies and rains over Batanes.

The rest of the country will continue to experience hot and humid weather due to the prevalence of the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

In its extended weather outlook for key areas from May 16 to 19, PAGASA said that maximum air temperatures may reach 34-35 degrees Celsius (℃) in Metro Manila, 31-35℃ in Tuguegarao City, 23-25℃ in Baguio City, 31-32℃ in Tagaytay City, 32-33℃ in Puerto Princesa City, 32-33℃ in Metro Cebu, 32-33℃ in Metro Davao, and 32-33℃ in Zamboanga City.

However, PAGASA said there remains a possibility of afternoon or evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

It advised the public to stay vigilant during severe thunderstorms, which are often associated with bursts of heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds that usually last up to two hours, as these may trigger flash floods or landslides.
