Comelec says hacking attempts 'not a cause for concern'

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the numerous attempts to hack into its website is “not a cause for concern,” the spokesperson of the poll body said, Sunday, May 15.

The poll body recently learned from the Department of Communications and Technology (DICT) that over 20,000 attempted attacks on the Comelec website have been prevented and blocked.

“It’s really not a cause for concern... But we will look into this,” Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex C. Laudiangco said when asked if the poll body is alarmed by the attempts to hack into the Comelec’s website.

He noted that the poll body and its “allied agencies” have been gearing up for the elections for years, noting that one of the preparations they have done was to fortify the website of the Comelec.

“That’s why really it’s not something for us to note, but not necessarily a concern to affect our mandate...”

In an earlier press briefing, Laudiangco said the DICT was also able to identify certain Internet Protocol Addresses or IPs.

As such, he added that the DICT, through its Cybercrime Investigation Division, is pursuing the IPs that they have identified.

The host of Comelec’s official website is the DICT.
