Over 2OK attempts to attack Comelec website recorded by DICT—Laudiangco

More than 20,000 attempted attacks on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) website have been prevented and blocked by the Department of Communications and Technology (DICT), Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex C. Laudiangco disclosed, Saturday, May 14.

“Marami pong sumubok na i-attack ‘yung website ng Comelec (Many have tried to attack Comelec’s website) since May 8 and May 9 including our election results website, but all of these were denied by the DICT,” he said, citing the report of DICT Usec. Maria Victoria C. Castro to the poll body.

Per Laudiangco, the DICT was also able to identify certain Internet Protocol Addresses or IPs.

“They (DICT) will be pursuing that through their Cybercrime Investigation Division,” he added.

Meanwhile, DICT did not disclose yet to the Comelec if most of the sources of the attacks were foreign or local.

The Comelec has lauded the DICT for being able to defend the poll body’s website against such cyber-attacks.

“Tuloy-tuloy po silang nagbabantay at aming pasasalamat sa DICT at sa kanilang representative kanina Usec. Maria Victoria C. Castro (The DICT will continue in guarding the Comelec website and we thank the agency and its representative a while ago, Usec. Maria Victoria C. Castro),” the acting spokesperson expressed.

The DICT is currently the host of the Comelec’s official website, in accordance with the government’s policy.
