Batanes, parts of Mindanao to experience rain showers due to frontal system, ITCZ

Two rain-inducing weather systems will prevail over Batanes, Caraga, and Davao Region in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Saturday afternoon, May 14.

The frontal system may bring rains over Batanes, while the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) may bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Caraga and Davao Region.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will continue to experience hot and humid weather due to the prevalence of the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

In its extended weather outlook for key areas from May 15 to 18, PAGASA said that maximum air temperatures may reach 34-35 degrees Celsius (℃) in Metro Manila, 34-35℃ in Tuguegarao City, 24-25℃ in Baguio City, 31-32℃ in Tagaytay City, 32-33℃ in Puerto Princesa City, 32-33℃ in Metro Cebu, 32-33℃ in Metro Davao, and 32-33℃ in Zamboanga City.

PAGASA, however, said there remains a possibility of afternoon or evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

It advised the public to stay vigilant during severe thunderstorms, which are often associated with bursts of heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds that usually last up to two hours, as these may trigger flash floods or landslides.

PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said there is a slim chance of tropical cyclone development within the next five days.
